A couple of months ago, I was talking to Mom. It was right after Lisa and James had moved out of Mom and Dad's house and into one of their own. She had told me now that all of the kids had move out and they were empty nesters, Dad was talking about wanting to do more experimental cooking. You know, trying new styles and dishes that we wouldn't eat because kids are picky. First, I thought that was a great idea. Then, I was mad that I didn't live at home anymore and wouldn't get to eat any awesome new food. Sometimes living on your own is not all it's cracked up to be...no one else will cook for you, or do the dishes! I thought about it over the next few days (mostly trying to think of a way I could be consistently invited for dinner) and came up with an idea. Why not do a theme dinner once a month? We'd pick one theme-a location, an ingredient, pop culture, whatever-and every one had to stick to it. Every one would have an dish they were in charge of-appetizer, soup or salad, main dish, sides, dessert, drink-and we'd share a meal and an try new things. And viola, theme night was born.
One thing you have to know about the Hedman family, we can cook. Pretty much all of us. Uncles, cousins, you name it. If we ever had a family reunion, it would be like a chili cook-off, but probably with stroganoff. We're not formally trained, unless you count YouTube as a source of education. My sisters are freaking awesome bakers. Seriously. It is sort of a good thing that they don't live next door to me or I would be a thousand pounds. If I were rich, I'd buy us a bakery and they could bake all the goodies and I would eat for free...mmm...pie...Sorry-tangent! Anyhow, knowing the Hedman superpower is the ability to put together a dang good meal, I was especially interested to see where this could go. So my friends, I will chronicle this culinary journey and make you ever so jealous that you were not present to eat it with us. I'll post the recipes so you can try it out too. See I really am nice no matter what others say! Enjoy and tell us what you think!
